What does Mwanzo Mean?

Mwanzo means "new beginnings" or "genesis" in Swahili. In the Mwanzo program, we support you with the tools to help you take action on your idea so you can launch your business.

Who can apply?

The ideal candidates for the BBVA's Mwanzo program must have:

High Motivation

Be motivated to bring your idea to life and be ready to commit time to develop your business.

Compelling Problem

Have a business idea that is solving a compelling problem using technology.

Coachable

Be coachable, ambitious, and collaborative.

Black-led

Have at least one Black-led founder or co-founder.

What will you learn?

Mwanzo program is designed to provide you with the essential tools and skills to get clarity on your idea and take the following steps to get towards your founder's journey. During the program, we will focus on these critical areas:

1. Ideation

Learn how to package a business idea that sells and is precisely what customers want and investors like.

2. Planning

Simplify your vision and establish your goals in a one-page plan for funders and partners.

3. Finance

Learn a simple way to create a financial model in 20 minutes without excel magic or an accountant.

4. Selling

Learn how to sell your idea to others and let them join you to invest time, money, and effort.

Do I need to have a business idea?We highly recommend you have a business idea. However, you don't have to have one to participate in the program. Contact us for more information at: [email protected].
How much does this program cost?There is no cost or fee to the program.
How long is the program/ How many hours/ weeks?For live workshops, it is a 4-week program with 2hrs workshop every week, however the hybrid can be completed at your own pace.
What language will the program be in?English.
I already have a business. Will this work for me?While we focus on participants with new business ideas, this program can help provide you with new knowledge to ignite your current.
Will this program be virtual or in-person?Yes, the program is 100% virtual.
Are the workshops scheduled during 9-5 working hours?The live workshops are delivered in the evening Mountain Time zone to accomodate those working 9 -5
What happens after the program?We continue to give advice and make introductions as long as our startups need — and so does the informal network of BBVA's companies.
